Sew Fantastic Show Off {Leather Bottom Tote}

1I’m three weeks away from my most favorite library program: Sew Fantastic.  For our Fall session, we met once a month and worked on smaller projects.  I decided that I wanted to do it a little different for our Winter session and I scheduled us three Thursdays in a row so that we could work on one bigger project.  What’s the project, you ask?  See Kate Sew’s Leather Bottom Tote.

2Because we are going to be meeting three weeks consecutively, I wanted to focus on a project that had some harder elements to it, while still being a fairly easy concept for a young novice to grasp.  (This bag is pretty much a GIANT pouch with straps.)  My teens are going to hate me, but by the end of this session, they will be able to sew in a zipper (!!!!!), box corners, and sew an X to reinforce their bag’s straps.  {Note:  I say “hate” me, but, in truth, they will love me when we’re done.  I have seen the zipper make girls cry, but it is TOTALLY worth it once it’s done.  This is going to be an incredible project for us, and with three weeks, we should be able to move at a comfortable pace.}

If you want to try your hand at making this super stylish bag, check out the tutorial at See Kate Sew.  I did make a few adjustments to the original tutorial.

First, I added pockets: 8Dax ran over and stuck his spoon in my pocket.  I guess he wanted to check to make sure they worked.  I haven’t decided if I will actually do this step with my teens.  I guess it depends on how many sign up and how fast we’re moving along.  But, I knew I would be rocking this bag and I WANTED pockets.

Next, I added a fusible interfacing to the lining.  I wanted the bag to have a bit more structure, especially with a pocket: 7

Okay, I don’t know what I did wrong, but a 20″ zipper was way too big for me, so I ended up cutting mine down to 18″: 6{Zipper too big?  See Kate Sew has a tutorial for that, too.}

It took me about 5 hours to complete the bag and I LOVE LOVE LOVE the finished project:

Here’s a shot of the interior fabric:  4

It’s a great size bag!  It holds all of my essentials, plus my pouch of diapers/wipes and a sippy cup: 3

Sew Fantastic begins in February and I can’t wait.  Maybe my teens will even let me take pictures of their finished bags?  If they do, I’ll post pictures.

Thanks for stopping by…

  1. I LOVE this bag, the colors and pattern are so my style! I am jealous of your crafting abilities! Like I said, I had a fight with our machine but I am out to prove Robyn wrong and finish the stupid crib sheet I wanted to make for Ashton…keep your fingers crossed for me–I need all the luck I can get!
